WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT NO MORE BUTTS?

Here are some common questions, answered.

If you cannot find an answer to your question, please reach us at contact@nomorebutts.org. We value your interest and think it's better to seek answers, rather than making assumptions.

No More Butts was founded in 2020 and has been fighting for "A World Without Tobacco Waste" ever since on the international stage.

We are a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).

No More Butts is a charitable organisation, run by Board of volunteers. We have been successful in receiving government grants to delivery programs on the ground, we have received prize money from various community awards, and we also collect donations from the community who wish to support our work.

Volunteering is at the heart of our organisation, and this has allowed us to undertake cleanup activities such as our Big Butt Hunts. Our knowledge in this space has also allowed us to be paid by government agencies, ultimately supporting our advocacy efforts, attendance at events and the codesign of litter prevention programs for tobacco waste.

If this has got you interested in contributing to our mission, you can find out how to donate here. If you would like to review our financial reports, they are contained in our Annual Reports, with the latest one linked here.

The primary goal of No More Butts is to seek a ban on filters in cigarettes, globally. This is not a radical position; it is one supported by the World Health Organization, the Belgian Superior Health Council and Doctors for the Environment Australia. It is a position that has received written support from the three major political parties in Australia, as well Independent politicians and dozens of Non-governmental Organisations.

It is true that we are looking for a ban on filters. However, even with global collaboration on this topic, a ban may not take place for years. Litter creates litter and we know that cigarette butts are the most littered item in the world. Cigarette butts can take up to 15 years to decompose, so this waste still needs to be cleaned up. We partner with other organisations to ensure maximum impact, whilst we continue our advocacy in parallel.

No. The tobacco industry has had decades to act on the environmental impacts of tobacco waste and they have chosen not to. We will not take funds from tobacco companies (or from those known to be advancing their interests). This includes for our clean ups, awareness campaigns, or our advocacy work. Our Conflict of Interest statement that forms part of a declaration from all members, volunteers and directors also outlines this position.

Review our financials in our latest Annual Report here.

No. No More Butts does not engage with tobacco companies or those seeking to further their interest. We do not work with them, nor for them. Please review our Conflict of Interest policy for more details.

In our role as advocates for change, we will participate in government-led situations to develop tobacco control measures, noting it must be transparent and completed in  accordance with World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Article 5.3.

No. No More Butts has never had any form of agreement or partnership with TerraCycle. Whilst we previously shared information on our social media and talked about the TerraCycle recycling process, we no longer do so in an abundance of caution, as we are aware that the international parent company may have an association with the tobacco industry.

Our Conflict of Interest policy, is located in the footer of all pages of our website and can be found directly here: Conflict of Interest. In addition, all volunteers, members and directors are requested to fill out a specific Conflict of Interest declaration.

We acknowledge that our work takes place on the traditional lands of Indigenous Peoples around the world. We honour them as the original and continuing stewards who have cared for these beautiful lands and waters since time immemorial, and we recognise their profound and enduring connection to culture and community. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging, and to all Indigenous Peoples. As an organisation, we are committed to learning from and supporting Indigenous communities in our work.
