As Cairns residents may be aware, this month, the Gimuy community have lost an Elder, Gudju Gudju Fourmile.
Upon hearing of this loss, No More Butts engaged Cairns Regional Council and were initially advised that we could proceed with our event.
However, as the service has since been announced for Friday 20th, we consulted Council again and agreed that it was best to postpone our event, out of respect for the community and so that people can attend the service, if they wish.
We fully support the decision that has been made.
We will discuss with Council if we can postpone to another date, however this will depend on availability of personnel, so there is a chance that the event will be cancelled for 2024.
The Big Cigarette Butt Hunt is back in Cairns for 2024.
In 2023, five teams battled it out for the prestigious recognition of collecting the most cigarette butts during the event, with a whopping 10,350 butts collected.
Teams are formed and on the day, they are allocated a street, as they navigate their way from Cairns Central, down to the Reef Eye on the Western Events Lawn along the Cairns Esplanade.
Teams are provided with PEP and biodegradable bags to collect the cigarette butts in. The team who has collected the most amount of cigarette butts in the 1.5 hours will be crowned the winner for 2024.
Sign up as an Individual, or to an existing team. If you would like to create a new team, just let us know via contact@nomorebutts.org and we'll add it to the list.
We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country throughout Australia and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture. We recognise they have cared and maintained the beautiful environment for time immemorial. We would like to pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging and extend that respect to all Indigenous communities.
