BIG BUTT HUNT - MARCH 2, 2025

After the first event in 2022, in 2023, five teams battled it out for the prestigious recognition of collecting the most cigarette butts during the event, with a whopping 10,350 butts collected in an hour and a half.Teams are formed and on the day they are allocated a street, navigating their way from Cairns Central, down to the Reef Eye on the Western Events Lawn along the Cairns Esplanade.
Teams are provided with PEP and biodegradable bags to collect the cigarette butts. The team who has collected the most amount of cigarette butts in the 1.5 hours will be crowned the winner for the Clean Up Australia Day 2025 Cairns Big Butt Hunt.

• What: The 2025 Clean Up Australia Day Cairns Community Big Butt Hunt
• When: Sunday March 2nd, 9:00am – 11:00am
• Where: Meet at Cairns Central Taxi Rank. The event will conclude at Cairns Esplanade Western Events lawn
• Who: Teams will be assembled from community members, local businesses, environmental groups, cafes, universities, as well as a council team
• Why: Cigarette butts are the most littered item, with an estimated 800 thousand butts littered each week in Cairns alone
